The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mrs. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare has reiterated government’s commitment to beef up security in the country to encourage tourism.
According to her, there are growing concerns across the world as terrorism grows, hence the decision to take pragmatic measures to assure Ghanaians and tourists to invest in the tourism sector.
The Tourism Minister made these assertions at the just ended 103rd session of United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Executive Council meeting in Andalusia city of Malaga, Spain.
“Ghana has put adequate mechanisms and measures in places to help curb the act of terrorism in case it occurs,” she said.
She disclosed that an inter-ministerial committee was working effectively with the ministries of interior and defence to make sure that the measures and plans were implemented.
She added that the public has been sensitized by the security forces on what to look out for and what to do in the case of attack or suspected terror attack.
She implored member countries of the UNWTO to stand by each other in the case of any attack.
She stated that as part of Ghana’s move aimed at fighting terrorism, the country stood by La Cote d’Ivoire when it was hit by a terrorist attack.
She commended the leadership of the UN Tourism body for standing by La Cote d’Ivoire as it prepares to host the 58th Commission for Africa General Assembly in Abidjan.
On the sidelines of the Executive Council Meeting, the Tourism Minister also held discussions with the UNWTO Themis Foundation Head, Mr. Omar Valdez and the Director for Africa-UNWTO Elsia Grandcourt.
