Innovators ready to partner govt

Some players in the technology sector have hinted of plans to partner government in its agenda to develop the economy through tech and innovation.

According to them, government can tap into their experience and ideas on how best to channel the necessary resources in the right areas to help solve some of the socio economic problems facing the country as well as create more employment opportunities.

Speaking to Citi Business News on the matter, Founder of Women in Tech Africa, Ethel Cofie said talks have begun with government to intensify innovation among women.

“So part of what we are doing is that, we are having a rigorous application process, the best and innovative ideas will make it through to the boot camp. We are also talking to the ministry. We are also talking to the Accra Digital Center. We are working with various arms of government to ensure that whatever innovation comes out of it, the country as a whole will get the best” she said.

She spoke to Citi Business News at the sidelines of the launch of the MTN Girl Code.

About Girl Code

The MTN Ghana Foundation in partnership with Women in Tech Africa has launched the maiden edition of the MTN Apps camp for girls, dubbed: “MTN Girl Code: Tech camp for ladies going places.”

The initiative is to encourage young women to participate in coding and computer programming, thus increasing the number of females actively involved in the development of programmes and Apps.

Cynthia Lumor, the Director of the MTN Foundation also spoke during the event and stated how the MTN Foundation was set up to help uplift people through the power of ICT.

“It is our hope that by training more women in the sector, the benefits of Apps development and ICT as a whole would be extended to the large society, and that ultimately, it would improve the livelihood of people in communities across Ghana.”

She added “this project is aligned to MTN Ghana Foundation’s ambition to increase the participation of ladies in the MTN Apps Challenge from less than three percent currently to an appreciable percentage in the next three years”.
