The International Monetary Fund(IMF) is collaborating with government to assess key policies to be introduced in the 2018 budget.
Government is expected to introduce some major policies in the budget such as a reduction in electricity tariff as well as plans to roll out other campaign promises.
Speaking to Citi Business News from Washington DC where a government economic team led by the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is meeting an IMF team, a Deputy Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah stated that the IMF team is optimistic of Ghana making economic gains.
“They are looking forward to the new set of economic policies that we are rolling out in the 2018 budget. They expect Ghana to recover at a certain pace, but we have also been explaining to them that perhaps, an over excited recovery pace may even bring some shocks to the economy and therefore it is important to pace the recovery in a manner that doesn’t create shocks to the economy.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah stated that the IMF has expressed satisfaction at the policies of the Nana Addo government and will continue to monitor the progress.
He observed that the IMF has pledged its support to help government achieve its macroeconomic targets.
“They are also open to that argument. They have expressed the view that they are pleased with what we have done but they will also be keeping an eye on Ghana because sometimes people make commitments and don’t end up following through,” he said.
