The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Efutu, Mr Alexander Afenyo Markin, has been invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to assist in investigations into allegations of fraudulent deals involving GH¢250,000 at the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB).

[contextly_sidebar id=”LrAhuy7IdxYpgJsAlMzqODJwb3yb1cBO”]This followed a petition to the Director General of the CID by three members of the public. Petitioners The petitioners are Dzifa Gonu, Stephen Kwabena Atuk and Fred Adomaku Williams.

They appealed to the CID to investigate the serious allegations made against Mr Markin following the floating of shares by the ADB.

The three copied the petition to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Attorney-General, the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), the Christian Council of Ghana, among other bodies.

Warrant of arrest

A source close to the police that told the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday said following the petition, the CID went for a warrant of arrest from the court and wrote to the Speaker of Parliament about the intention of the police to arrest the MP to assist in investigations.

But before the police could arrest him, Mr Markin was said to have reported himself to the police.

Admitted to bail

After his statement had been taken, Mr Markin was admitted to bail of GH¢500,000, with two sureties to be justified.

According to the source, Mr Markin would be charged for extortion, contrary to Section 151 of the Criminal Offence Act 1960 (Act 29).

During the floatation of ADB shares earlier this year which generated a lot of controversy, the MP is said to have been caught on tape saying that he went for GH¢250,000 for what he described as legal gymnastics.
