Police on Tuesday evening foiled a robbery attack at the Ridge branch of the First Atlantic Bank in Accra.
According to a customer at the Bank who spoke to Citifmonline.com, the incident occurred around 4:30pm when a customer who had cashed bulk money in a bag and was about moving on a motorbike, was suddenly accosted by the robbers who started firing warning shots.
The customer, who was the pillion rider, was reportedly shot by one of the robbers several times in the leg after he refused to hand over the money to them.
According to the source, the customer eventually handed over the money to the robbers, but just when they were about to flee the scene with the money on another motorbike, police arrived at the scene and shot one of them in the leg.
The injured robber was thus arrested, while the other managed to escape. The money has also been retrieved and is in the custody of the bank.
The other person who was with the customer on the motorbike was not harmed, but the injured customer is receiving treatment at an unknown hospital.
Police officers stationed at the First Atlantic Bank, and others from a nearby bank (Stanchart), assisted in handling the situation.
According to the source, during the firing of the gunshots, they were asked to lie down to avoid being hit, whereas other persons on the bank’s compound run to safety.
“When the attack was going on, the motor rider took off his helmet and used it to hit the armed robber’s head several times, but the robber did not stop the attack on the customer,” he narrated.
