Algeria: Towards Lifting Ban On Used Car Import

The Government has decided, as part of the finance bill 2017, to lift the ban on used car import under some conditions, said Monday in Algiers Minister of Trade Bakhti Belaib.

“We will lift the ban and draw up defined terms and conditions, which will allow not importing vehicles representing dangers to road users. This means that we will authorize the import of these vehicles under some conditions,” he explained during El Moudjahid Forum.

“The most important is that it would be a transparent market and the buyers would have sufficient guarantees,” added the minister.

The Government is currently examining best means to organize the used cars market, said Belaib, adding that the market would allow importing high-performance cars and much less expensive than some new imported vehicles.

In this regard, the minister said that there are some car manufacturers who are making vehicles for Algeria but they are not complying with international standards.
