Govt will prosecute public officials who steal state funds- Kwaku Kwarteng

A Deputy Minister of Finance Kwaku Kwarteng has vowed to sanction individuals and politicians whose actions result in loss of revenue to the state.

The minister added that public officials who will be found infringing on laws that protect public funds will be prosecuted.

In an interview with Citi Business News, Mr. Kwarteng warned that government will deal severely with officials of such acts.

“We are clear in our minds that if we will deliver on our 2017 revenue projections, then we need to fight certain  tendencies in our revenue mobilization efforts that seek to make it difficult for us to get the kind of revenue we need to prosecute the agenda for government,” he said.

“That is why I state with emphases that government will fight irregularities in revenue mobilization and I am confident that it is a fight we will win,” he added.

The Minister maintained that government will take steps to make sure all irregularities in the revenue generation system do not go unchecked.

Mr. Kwarteng made the statement at the sidelines of the 2017 GRA Annual Management Retreat held in Koforidua today.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Emmanuel Kofi Nti also stated that the GRA is coming up with structures and measures to enhance revenue generation for the government.

“The measures that we are putting in place in order to achieve the full year’s target is what is important. So the issue for us is to make sure we work hard to achieve the target, there is no way out. We have designed measures to ensure we make the target. In March, we were a negative overall -2.8, by April ending we have come down to about 1.7. So we are heading towards the future. We believe we will make the target.” he stated.
