Ghana’s road infrastructure poor- Report

A new report published by the Ghana Institution of Engineers(GhIE) has scored Ghana’s road infrastructure as poor, lacking the capacity to meet international standards.

The report titled “Ghana Infrastructure Report Card 2016” scored the country’s road network, electric power and water infrastructure  with a grade of D3, representing poor.

Speaking to Citi Business News after the report was launched by the Senior Minister, Ingineer Yaw Osafo Mafo, the Chairman of the Report Committee,  Ingineer. Dr. Charles Anum Adams said the research exposes the poor nature of Ghana’s key infrastructure.

He explained that “the overall grading of roads and bridges, electric power, and potable water infrastructure had a score of D3 representing poor”.

On road infrastructure, Ing. Adams stated that the sector had a score of 2.79 out of 5 points.

This, he explained means that the country’s road infrastructure lacked the ability to  withstand the weather pattern, as well as have a shorter lifespan compared to international standards.

He pointed out that even though some relatively new systems have been added to the stock in the last few years, the majority of the systems have  shown general signs of deterioration, hence require attention.

“Most infrastructure exhibit significant deficiencies in conditions and functionality, with increasing vulnerability to risk,” he said.

He suggested that finance is a major constraint to renewal, operations and maintenance of infrastructure.
