Employment Ministry focused on retraining of public sector workers

The Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations says it is focusing on the training of workers within the public sector to improve service delivery in that sector.

Speaking to Citi Business News at the sidelines of the Administration Professionals Conference organized by the Chartered Institute of Administrators and Management Consultants-Ghana, Minister for Employment and Labor Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah charged heads of public institutions to build the capacity of their workers to equip them with new skills.  He said although costly, that will improve service delivery in the public sector.

He explained that: “what is more important is training people so that they will know their responsibilities so that they will be able to give off their best.”

The Minister stated further that low productivity will still be recorded in public organizations even if legislation is passed to improve service delivery without boosting the capacity of the staff.

“If you come out with legislation and the people who are supposed to implement the legislation are not up to what is required of them, then certainly you will not get the best out of that,” Mr. Awuah noted.

Mr. Paul Hammond, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Chartered Institute of Administrators and Management Consultants-Ghana, on his part advocated for an improved working environment for administrative professionals to increase productivity.

“As companies grapple with how to increase productivity, improve retention levels and keep pace with the modern workforce and impressive office interiors, there must be programs to create the ideal work environment,” he expressed.
