The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has closed down a metering company as part of its compliance and enforcement exercise in the Greater Accra region to compel businesses to pay their taxes.
A special task force with the authority closed down the private metering company, Intelligent Metering and Solution Limited in East Legon.
This exercise follows a similar one undertaken last week by the GRA.
The Head of Debt Management, Compliance and Enforcement Unit of the GRA Michael Sefah said the company has not paid taxes to the tune of 6.8 million cedis.
Mr. Sefah explained to journalists that the GRA had no other option than to close the company since constant engagement with the owners have proved futile.
“They owe taxes up to 6.8 million cedis. This is principally made up of VAT of 5.8 million cedis. PAYEE of 80,000 cedis and interest of 700,000 cedis. We’ve realized they can’t pay and for that matter we are distressing them”
He however added that invitation has been extended to the company to come to the offices of the GRA to negotiate a payment plan.
Meanwhile, the Task Force of the GRA also visited Miklin Hotel in Accra which has defaulted in taxes to the tune of 2.8 million cedis.
The management of the company was able to reach an agreement with the GRA and signed a cheque of one million cedis to clear part of the 2.8 million cedis default in tax payment.
Mr. Sefah stated that management of the hotel has been directed to visit the GRA to outline plans of paying the rest of the money.
