President of the Ghana Institute of Freight Forwarders, Kwabena Ofosu Appiah has stated that the newly introduced government policy, Cargo Tracking Notes (CTN), is creating serious confusion at the ports.
According to him, the CTN has reinforced the confusion at the Port as importers outside the country are uncertain what exactly the newly introduced policy requires to operate smoothly.
“There is a lot of confusion out there because we are supposed to master this process here and let our clients know from foreign lands. The effect is being faced by those who want to ship into Ghana. We are being told that this thing is being piloted for two months” he explained.
Government early this month, begun the implementation of the CTN to aid in monitoring revenue of cargo ahead of arrival of goods at the Ports.
But Mr. Ofosu Appiah told Citi Business News government must revisit the system as it is rather causing chaos at the ports.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Takoradi, Kwabena Okyere Darko has insisted that the government will enforce the policy to check the inaccurate volumes of goods imported into the country.
“Per the imports they do , most at times the accounts was poorly done, so when the things were itemized and the necessary taxes applied, because of the paperless, people were found wanting. It is not because we have added any new taxes. That is why most of the time, The Minister of Finance has always asked for those bill of laden to be brought to them so they calculate it based on that” he explained.
He added that “ if people are complaining about tracking, it is because some people do not want to be checked, but we believe if people are doing fair business with government, we believe they should be transparent”.
