Telecom giant MTN has denied increasing the wholesale price of its scratch cards.
Retailers of MTN scratch cards on 5th January, 2015 began increasing the retail price of the cards.
According to them the move followed the increase of the wholesale price of the cards by the telecom giant.
Some vendors told Citi Business News prior to the increment a 5 cedis scratch card was going for 4 cedis 75 peswas but it is now at 4 cedis 7875 peswas.
Some vendors slapped about 10 percent charge on the scratch cards, following the move, with for a example a twenty cedis scratch card going for 20 cedis 20 peswes.
But MTN has denied the increment.
In a statement to Citi Business News it said ‘MTN has noted with concern the individual actions of some of its retailers to increase the prices of its scratch cards by various percentages’.
According to MTN it has not authorized its retailers to make any change to the price of its scratch cards.
‘MTN whishes to assure its customers it has not authorized retailers to make any changes to the price of its scratch cards or any other products’.
It advised its customers to pay the price inscribed on the scratch cards.
‘Customers are advised to pay and insist on paying prices inscribed on the scratch cards.’
Speaking on the development the Acting Sales and Distribution Executive for MTN Ghana Abubakar Mohammed said’ it is an unfortunate situation, such unilateral actions by retailers are worrying’.
He expressed the hope that retailers would revert to the appropriate prices as clearly indicted on the scratch cards.
