The Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) has resolved to allow foreign retailers in the Suame Magazine in Kumasi to operate today (August 15).

According to GUTA, the decision is to create peace and harmony between traders in the ECOWAS region operating in Ghana’s retail market while government takes steps to remove the foreign traders from the retail market.

GUTA believes the decision to allow the foreign traders back onto the market will influence stakeholders to act swiftly in finding an amicable solution to the issue.

National Welfare Officer of GUTA, Benjamin Yeboah said “Our members should allow the institutions to do its work by involving the law so that they will allow tranquility to prevail whilst the institutions that are mandated by law does its work”.

Members of GUTA in Suame who could not bear the sight of foreigners trading in the retail sector took matters into their own hands when they locked up shops of all foreign retailers.

The members’ vowed to keep it so until government remove all foreign retailers from the market.

The Trade Ministry, which earlier served notice to the retailers to vacate the retail market later rescinded on its decision to allow for education and sensitization first.

This decision was not received well by GUTA, hence their rebuttal.

Executive members of GUTA have however asked their members to promote tranquility in the retail trade sector in the region to promote peace.

Meanwhile, they have called on government to collaborate to enforce full compliance with the laws and regulations governing the activities of trading in Ghana to avert a possible recurrence.

“For emphases, the law states what? What does the treaty state? And therefore those institutions that are mandated by law should do their work so that such a situation does not recur”, Benjamin Yeboah noted.
