The Institute of Human Resource Management Practitioners (IHRMP)-Ghana has called for a redesign of the educational system to match the country’s human resources to what is needed by industries.
According to the Institute, its study has shown that the unemployment rate keeps going up due to the inability of the educational systems to produce human resources ready for the job market.
Speaking to Citi Business News, the president of the Institute of Human Resource Management Practitioners-Ghana, Mr. John Wilson stated that there is a need for a national policy to address the issue.
“We have a lot of vacancies around but you go to the organizations and they are not getting the right HR people , meaning that there is a gap between what industry wants and what is available,” he said.
He stated that managers have always complained about the disconnect between what is taught at schools and what is demanded by the job market to enhance productivity.
Touching on some recommendations, Mr. Wilson maintained that there must be a policy shift in the educational system to match the demands in the job market to subjects in schools.
“So we got to look at matching training to needs of industry so we can match people. We must sensitize the government and other employers to push for shift in the educational system,” he said.
He noted that a pragmatic policy, designed locally, will not only match the jobs to what is taught at schools but will also help identify the real sectors economy that require specific HR practitioners for training.
“We need such policies to even tell us which areas need which specific HR and the number that is required. It will help the nation grow because we will know the sectors of the economy that need the HR and the number required so that we don’t over produce or under produce in those areas,” he said.
