The latest increase of between 18 to 27 percent in the prices of petroleum products occasioned by the passage of the Energy Sector Levy (ESL) by Parliament last month, is expected to take effect from today [Monday] January 4.
Although a good number of fuel stations say they will be effecting the changes today, Citi News’ checks at some fuel stations in Accra over the weekend, revealed that some have already started charging the new prices.
At some of the fuel stations visited around the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, a gallon of petrol was selling at about Ghc15.40 pesewas with diesel going for Ghc14.50 pesewas.
But majority of them said they were waiting to effect the changes from Monday.
The price of LPG has also gone up by about 18 percent price per kilogram. But for the introduction of the levy, the price of diesel would have been reduced by 10%.
Petrol on the other hand, would have been reduced by some 5.5 percent per liter at the pumps but the levy has triggered an increase of at least 27 percent.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has warned all its members to desist from increasing transport fares until the union engages the Transport Ministry.
Some transport owners have served notice of a possible increase in fares.
But the Chairman of the GPRTU Kwame Kuma in an interview with Citi News said drivers have no right to increase the fares until a directive is given to that effect.
In recent times, transport fares have remained unchanged despite intermittent marginal reductions in the prices of petroleum products as a result of the implementation of the petroleum deregulation policy.
