The Commercial Quarry Operators Association has served notice to prosecute property owners who site properties within 500 meters of licensed concession.
The quarry operators have urged property owners to relocate or be forcibly ejected to prevent fatal accidents.
There have been growing public concerns over citing of quarries close to developing residential communities.
“People are encroaching and building on it and because of that we are losing these rocks. When it goes down, you either spend money to relocate community before you access it or you let it go. So we need to educate the public to know that the rock is ours and we have to protect it and keep it for the future,” the General Secretary of the Commercial Quarry Operators Association, Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah stated.
Speaking to Citi Business News, Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah further appealed for collaboration to implement the directive, explaining that the quarry industry is key to the development of the economy.
“There are dangers with the operations when it comes to blasting. So if people are living close to it, and there is a blast, there can be fatalities or properties destroyed. Therefore we need to prevent people from getting close to it. We need the collaboration of all stake holders,”
“We have realized that granite rocks are a very important resource to the nation Ghana and not to any particular operator. It is for the development of Ghana. Ghana we have not even developed one quarter of our developmental needs so we still need the rocks.” He observed.
