Dr. Asiama, Deputy Governor, BoG

President Mahama appoints new Second Deputy BoG Governor

President John Mahama has appointed Dr. Johnson P. Asiama as the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

His appointment took effect from April 5, 2016.

Dr. Johnson P. Asiama replaces Dr. Abdul-Nashiru Issahaku who has been appointed as a Governor following the early retirement of former Governor, Dr. Henry Kofi Wampah.

A statement signed by the Minister of Communications, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah confirmed the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama.

Until his elevation, Dr. Asiama  was the Assistant Director at the Economics Department of the Bank of Ghana where he coordinated the work of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and supported the work of the Governors directly.

He holds a PHD (Economics) from the University of Southhampton UK and an MPHIL (Economics) from the University of Ghana, Legon.

He has also previously served as Director of the Macroeconomic Management Department at the West African Institute for Financial and Economic Management (WAIFEM) in Lagos, Nigeria.

Dr. Wampah retires

Dr. Henry Wampah took an early retirement on April 1, this year; five clear months before his official retirement which is due in August.

Industry players had commended Dr. Wampah’s tenure as he promoted the adoption of cashless transactions in the country.

Dr. Wampah however did not win the hearts of many over concerns of the many unfortunate developments within the economy.

These included; a fast depreciating local currency, a high interest rate regime as well as cases of fraud in the microfinance industry.
