Algeria has caught its full annual quota of bluefin tuna, 450 tonnes, as set by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), said the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishing in a communiqué.
The eleven Algerian tuna fishing vessels authorized to participate in the 2016 season, from 26 May to 24 June, caught the full quota (450 tonnes) allocated by the ICCAT to Algeria for the current year.
In addition to the royalties from the fishing season, totalling DZD11.75 million, foreign currency revenue from bluefin tuna exports will amount to nearly US$5 million, said the Ministry.
“The positive results will strengthen Algeria’s position within the ICCAT and allow it to regain its initial quota,” said the Ministry’s communiqué.
