A total of 1,147 mines, dating from the colonial period, were discovered and destroyed during the mine-clearing operation carried out by units of the People’s National Army along the country’s eastern and western borders in June 2016, said Monday an official source.
Army units discovered and destroyed 14 antipersonnel mines and 4 anti-group mines in the 2nd Military Region, in addition to 1,099 antipersonnel mines, 28 anti-group mines and 2 flare mines in the 5th Military Region, said the source.
Up to 30 June 2016, a total of 839,639 mines, including 696,177 antipersonnel mines, 137,813 anti-group mines and 5,649 flare mines were discovered and destroyed by Army units, added the official source.
