Egypt: Somalia Seizes Expired Food Aid From Egypt

The Federal government of Somalia says it seized a shipment of expired food aid imported by a relief agency from Egypt at Mogadishu seaport on Sunday (July 29, 2016).

Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu, the state minister of the interior ministry Abdirashid Mohamed Hidig, said the food aid was destined to drought-hit areas in southern Somalia.

“Somali security forces at Mogadishu harbor, seized 7 containers packed with expired food aid imported from Egypt by a humanitarian agency,” Hidig told reporters in Mogadishu.

The Egyptian relief organization which was not indentified so far has not yet publicly commented on the seizure of the expired food aid in Mogadishu.

Last May, Somali police seized tones of expired food from World Food Programme [WFP] at Mogadishu airport. The food aid was destined for drought affected areas in Gedo region.
