The import licenses system will soon include other industrial and agricultural products, particularly electrical appliances, soya and maize, announced Monday Trade Minister Bakhti Belaib.
“This system will soon include other industrial products (electrical appliances and electronic products) and some agricultural products (maize and soya) whose import cost hit USD 3.5 billion,” the minister said at El Moudjahid forum.
The government decided to broaden the system of licenses, in force since January 2016, with a view to protecting national industry and face the drop in foreign exchange incomes, Belaib explained.
“The country experiences a sharp drop in its foreign payment means. In this case, it is legitimate to resort to safeguard means,” he added.
For Belaib, “all countries have the right to protect their solvability as much as possible. We will resort, if need be, to other conservatory measures,” he stated.
