Mixed reactions over interests on mobile money

Customers of mobile money services have expressed mixed reactions to the payments of interests, a day after the process started.

The customers, who are generally happy about the development, however tell Citi Business News the amounts they received are quite insignificant.

“I am not happy and I am expecting more… I think 50 pesewas is not enough,” one customer recounted.

The four telecom operators [MTN, Tigo, Vodafone and Airtel] offering the service, yesterday (September 11, 2016), commenced paying interests for the first quarter on the mobile money wallets of their customers.

It follows the green light from the Bank of Ghana.

A total of about 12 million is to be distributed among the various subscribers for the first and second quarters.

Though some subscribers indicated they are yet to receive their messages confirming the payment of interests, they expressed joy at the announcement.

“This is good news and I am very happy because people can send money into my wallet and I will be enjoying interests every quarter when I withdraw for them,” one customer stated.

Another also stated, “I am happy but I am yet to receive my message from my network provider…I am not expecting anything huge though.”

Meanwhile a mobile money agent in the capital who claims he doubted the authenticity of the development, however intimated he is yet to receive payments.

“I received a message indicating that interests will be paid on September 18, but as for today, September 11, I haven’t received any information yet on the interest so I am waiting…. Honestly, I didn’t believe it initially but I understand it is coming from the Bank of Ghana so we hope they keep their promise,” he remarked.
