The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has introduced an Insurance Cover for participants of this year’s paragliding event which will take place at Kwahu during the Easter festivities.
The move follows the Kintampo waterfalls disaster which led to the death of about 19 students.
The insurance policy will provide public liability insurance for organizers of the Kwahu paragliding festival, personal accident insurance cover for pilots, passengers and various visitors as well as spectators attending the festival.
The full Insurance Cover which is being sponsored by GLICO is worth GHS100, 000.
Addressing the press, the Chief Executive Officer at the Ghana Tourism Authority Akwasi Agyeman assured that the insurance will cover all participants of the paragliding celebration at Kwahu.
“This year, there are a few things that are new. Chief among them is an insurance cover for people who will be going to Kwahu for the paragliding event. But I will stand on that to assure the general public that the fact that we are adding insurance to paragliding doesn’t mean that it is not a safe event,” he explained.
“This event has been going on for twelve years and there has been no incident whatsoever. But insurance is a way of life; it is part of any activity. If you have a car you insure it, it doesn’t mean it is going to be involved in an accident. But in case any unfortunate incident happens, there is a fall back for you and that is why we are partnering with GLICO for this event.” he added.
Mr. Agyeman stated that the action is to initiate steps to ensure a non-recurrence of the disaster that happened in Tamale.
“Given the unfortunate incident that happened recently in Kintampo, we have taken steps to make sure that insurance becomes part of the safety requirements for every tourist attraction,” he said.
Group Head, Corporate Affairs, and Marketing at GLICO Group, Nana Afua Rockson also added that the move is part of initiatives to promote local tourism.
“It is my hope that the introduction of the insurance cover will be essential for the promotion of local tourism and the needed peace of mind of Ghanaians,” she said.
