An American firm is set to enter Kenya’s telecommunications sector through the acquisition of a company that provides software to mobile virtual network operators (MVNO).
Ciao Group yesterday said it was in talks to acquire the provisioning software company in line with a strategy to deepen its presence in developing markets.
MVNOs are phone companies such as Equitel which do not have their own infrastructure and instead piggyback on networks of mobile network operators (MNOs) such as Airtel. Provisioning software allows MVNOs to link up to the MNO networks and to manage customer and billing data.
“When an MVNO makes a sale of a mobile service, instantaneous and efficient provisioning onto a third-party network providers network is vital. With this acquisition, we will be a go-to solution for not just Kenya, but all East Africa,” said Ciao Group chief executive Aubrey Brown.
He declined to reveal the name of the company tapped for acquisition.
Ciao Group designs and sells telecommunication products in the US, Europe, the Middle East and South America. The firm recently applied to change its name to NuMelo Technology.
It also announced that it will invest more in the communication sector with two acquisitions in the offing.
