Some former workers of Oceanspring Mineral Water are demanding for their outstanding arrears from the company after they were sacked.
According to the former workers, the company has refused to pay them their salaries after terminating their contracts.
It is unclear what led to the massive layoff but the workers say all attempts to get the company to pay them their cash has proved fruitless and has left them in difficult situations.
According to them, the company terminated their contracts without prior notice on July 3 this year with a promise to pay them four months’ salary which comprises two month arrears and the other two for terminating their contracts.
However, the company is yet to fulfill the promise as it keeps postponing the payment date.
A former worker of the company who gave his name as Gibson and had worked with Oceanspring Mineral Water for a little over a year told Citi Business News the company has postponed the payment date again to January next year.
“We were working for Oceanspring mineral water and we hadn’t been paid for close to two months but we were still working then all of a sudden, we went for a meeting and we were told that the company is no more without any prior notice. We were assured payment of our arrears but as at now we don’t know when they will do so. They keep postponing the payment date” he lamented.
Mr. Gibson added that the company owes him almost 10,000 cedis and he suspects the company is in financial crises.
Meanwhile, his colleague Michael, who was also affected by the layoff told Citi Business News the company had defaulted in paying their SSNIT contributions for about a year.
“Our SSNIT [contribution] has also not been paid. Information I have gathered from SSNIT shows that they have not paid into our various accounts for about a year”.
The former workers say justice is all they require from their former employers.
“We only want justice. We worked wholeheartedly a whole year and I don’t think this is fair”.
Meanwhile, attempts by Citi Business News to get Oceanspring for their side of the story have proven unsuccessful.
Citi Business News however understands the company is still operating although on a smaller scale.
