Government settles part of road debts

Road contractors who are owed monies by the government should expect to receive payment of some of their arrears today, Friday 5th January 2018.

This is according to the National Chairman of the Association of Road Contractors, Daniel Agroh.

Government has paid over one billion Ghana cedis within the past 11 months to road contractors as outstanding arrears for work executed during the previous government’s era.

However Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr. Amoako-Atta recently disclosed that the government has made arrangement to disburse another 120 million Ghana cedis to road contractors whose arrears had been outstanding between two to five years.

Speaking to Citi Business News on the matter, Mr. Agroh said the payment of the areas should bring some respite to the road contractors.

“The minister assured me that by Friday the arrears would at least be paid to the banks for it to be paid to the contractors. I actually went to his office and met up with him and I saw that they were processing the payment. So I can assure contractors that at least from the road fund some payment will come but it’s the payment from the Bank of Ghana that we are not sure of”.

He also explained that the money was paid through UBA bank as a loan at “Apart from the arrears the road fund is invested to UBA and for that the UBA takes 67 million from the fund every month, they have succeeded in getting this money as a loan from UBA so this will be paid to contractors at least to relieve them of their problems for the mean time.”
