The American Chamber of Commerce, Ghana has held a forum with the Ghana Police Service to discuss the new ways of partnering with the police to fight business related crimes.
The forum was aimed at understanding ‘the Transformational Agenda’ embarked upon by the Ghana Police Service in protecting lives and properties.
Speaking to Citi Business News, the President of the American Chamber of Commerce, Ghana, Mr. Joe Mensah explained that the police is a critical partner of business owners.
“The transformational agenda that they are talking about is something that is important to every business in the country. Ghana prides itself for being a peaceful place but if we don’t work closely with the police to continue to focus on that and continue to improve it, at some point, people will catch up with us and then we can’t brag about that anymore,” he warned.
Mr. Mensah stated that businesses and firms can always partner with the police to support them.
He pointed out that, individual companies can make it a pledge to adopt a police station in the country and help them fight crime by supporting with funds.
“We have a lot of American companies in Ghana who have been partnering the police and helping them. What we are saying is that, it can be expanded to reach all police stations who need support,” he stressed.
He was of the view that even though Ghana is noted as one of the best democracies in Africa, the police must be retooled and supported to protect the feat.
“Ghana is seen as very peaceful for business. That is one singular thing on the African continent that we use against everybody that we are the most peaceful environment. I think we must help the police to protect that,” he said.
On his part, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Appeatu stated that the police will do all it can to protect lives and properties.
He stated that the Ghana police has also collaborated with businesses to fight crimes.
Reacting to a question on how American businesses can enhance their partnership with the police, Mr. Asante-Appeatu stated that the police service is working to improve its forensic laboratory and will welcome any support from private companies.
