Government has been urged to allocate a greater percentage of its expenditure into the agricultural sector if it is to achieve its aim of growing the economy under the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO).
The programme, which will be launched on the 1st of May is expected to create 100,000 jobs in sectors including Agriculture, Education, Health, among others.
In an interview with Citi Business News, Economist Dr. Lord Mensah said in order for the economy to truly benefit from this initiative, a greater percentage of the potential workforce should be shifted into the agricultural sector.
“We should find a way to allocate those jobs into the sectors that will drive the economy so that at the end of the day, we will realize the output that these people are coming out with”.
Dr. Mensah stressed that investing in the agriculture sector will help create jobs for many Ghanaians, as well as provide raw material for the manufacturing sector.
He observed that it is important to identify subsectors in the agriculture sector to direct investment into such areas.
“We must allocate our resources to areas that will be efficient and can drive the economy. If you ask me, majority of these allocations should go into agriculture and then very few into the digitalization issues,” he said.
