Economists must actively engage policymakers — Former Nigerian central bank governor

The former central bank governor of Nigeria, Charles Soludo, has stated economists make it a point to actively engage policymakers in order for policies to become effective.

Prof. Soludo speaking as the keynote speaker at the K. B Amissah-Arthur Economic Forum said that while economic policies are meant for the good of the citizens, they are likely to fail if the needs of other constituents need to be taken into consideration.

“To make economics and economists to count in Africa, we must multitask. Economists must not remain just as researchers, thinkers but change agents or activists of some sort.

The prospective professor of economics must not be an academic researcher, he/she must have a great passion for proactive public policy.

Publishing 1,000 journal articles may be good on the CV, but the litmus test is which one actually changes anything,” he said.

The Forum, which is being held in memory of the late Vice-President who was also a former Governor of the central bank, was on the theme, Making Sense of Economics.
