COPEC pleased with compensation package for cheated fuel consumers

The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has expressed satisfaction at steps taken by some Oil Marketing Companies to compensate consumers for shortchanging them.

Checks by the Chamber confirmed findings of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) which revealed that ten fuel stations all in Accra under deliver fuel to consumers.

“Copec endorses the actions and steps taken by some OMC’s, but we want to see the others also do something in that regard. If it gets to a point where we feel the oil marketing companies which have been prompted on peculiar or specific happenings at some of the outlets across the country and no action has been taken whatsoever, we can assure that we will be able to inform the public and advise accordingly that people avoid those stations” Executive Secretary of COPEC, Duncan Amoah said.

Some OMCs such as Goil and Goodness Energy have since given out some promotional packages to compensate loyal customers at their various service stations.

In 2017, the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), sanctioned 57 oil marketing companies (OMCs) in the Greater Accra Region for engaging in illegal transaction activities that are not in the interest of consumers.

In an interview with Citi Business News, Mr. Amoah urged other OMC’s who were caught shortchanging consumers to ensure they compensate loyal customers soon.

“For now, I can assure that we are firmly on the ground, we draw the attention of the oil marketing companies to rectify the issues and when nothing is done about it in maximum 48hours, we are quite sure regulators and the public will also be made to know” he added.
