Ghana card critical for transactions and data collection – IT Consortium CEO

The Chief Executive Officer of IT Consortium, one of the leading financial technology companies in Africa, Romeo Bugyei, has called on government to push further for the widespread adoption of the Ghana Card to provide sufficient and credible data to strengthen transactions and boost the country’s digitization agenda.

Ghana’s multiple card systems are considered a hindrance to data collection on citizens for transactions, with many suggesting that the Ghana Card being issued by the National Identification Authority may be the solution to that problem.

There’s currently a mass registration exercise ongoing on regional basis for the issuance of the Ghana Card, but the exercise has been fraught with many challenges.

But for several years, the card is yet to be fully issued out and accepted for transactions.

Mr. Romeo Bugyei, who spoke to Citi Business News at the sidelines of the opening of the company’s new office block, said the Ghana Card is critical for  transactions and data collection in planning for the country.

“We also want to urge government to push for the Ghana card to be pervasive in the whole country because it is only by that that we can have unique transactions in this country where people technically cannot hide because it is by that we can really ensure that everybody is roped in, and when we have data to plan for our economy it is right because most at times the data that we use might not be sufficient. But if we have everybody roped in, then we will be able to know that we have 30 million, and out of the 30 million, we have 30 percent old and that kind of thing, then you can actually properly plan”.

“But if we dont put our efforts in this Ghana card to make it successful, we just keep going round and round without really getting all the citizenry into the space that will allow us all to contribute to national development.”

With the company’s new office block at Adjiringanor in Accra, Mr. Bugyei said their investment in state-of-the-art technology is to continually provide stable platforms for its digital services.

He said the company has employed more hands to embark on research projects and tackle cyber security to safeguard its operations as one of the leading payment aggregators in Ghana.
