IPR Ghana Awards: Newmont Ghana’s Sammy Osei named PR discovery as Newmont sweeps 3 more awards

Newmont Ghana’s Samuel Osei was on Saturday, February 29, 2020, named Ghana’s Public Relations Discovery of the Year by the Institute of Public Relations Ghana.

Newmont Ghana’s Communications team also won big on the night, taking away the award for Best PR Campaign, Best in Digital and Social Media, and Best PR Organization, extractive sector.

Speaking to citibusinessnews.com about the award, considering that he transitioned  from full-time journalism only few years ago, Mr. Osei said “I actually didn’t leave journalism, I carried journalism with me to my current practice, and the journey has been interesting. I’m still evolving as a Corporate communicator, and I’m blessed for the opportunity to learn from my leaders and colleagues in a company as great as Newmont. I’m humbled and grateful to the IPR for this award, and I look forward to continuously learning and developing to become one of the best in our industry.”

The Institute held its 8th Annual National PR and Communications Excellence Awards at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra where it honoured outstanding practitioners in the Public Relations profession

Samuel Osei is a Communications professional with extensive experience in Public Relations and media practice.

He is the Communications Specialist at the Africa Regional Office of Newmont, the world’s leading gold mining business, and is responsible for developing and managing strategic communications programmes that enhance the company’s reputation, brand and image.

Mr. Osei is currently the acting Manager, Communications and External Relations at the company’s Ahafo operations.

In his role, Samuel has significantly supported his team in employing persuasive communication skills to build business reputation and position the Newmont Ghana brand as one of the most attractive in Ghana’s mining industry.

He earlier served as the Senior Communications Officer at the company’s Ahafo mine before transitioning to his current role.

Prior to joining Newmont Ghana, Samuel worked with Accra-based Citi FM as a Broadcast Journalist and occupied key roles, including Online Editor and Head of Research and Features.

In 2018, Samuel Osei received an award from the then global CEO of Newmont, Gary Goldberg, for his efforts at promoting the culture of inclusion and diversity in the company, and for supporting the career development of Newmont’s women.

Samuel Osei is a member of the Institute of Public Relations, Ghana. He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, UK.

Other award winners

The ultimate award of the night, which is the PR Personality of the year, went to  Esi Hammond, Head of Communications at the Bank of Ghana, BoG.

PR organization of the year went to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust, SSNIT, whereas the Best in Non-profit communication went to Stratcomm Africa.

Stanbic Bank Ghana received the award for the Best in Technology, and also won best PR Organization of the year in the banking sector.

Vivo Energy received the Best in Community Relations award, while the Best in Issue and Crisis Communication went to the Ministry of Transport.

The Most Outstanding Student chapter of the year went to UPSA student chapter.

The Institute also conferred fellowship on some outstanding members of Ghana’s PR and Communication industry.

Internal Communicator of the year went to Olivia Mifetu of MTN Ghana, whiles PR academic of the year went to Dr. Mavis Amo-Mensah, University of Education, Winneba.

MTN Ghana won Best organisation of the year, telecom industry, while PR agency of the year went to Touch Point Magna Carta.
