The Ghana Shippers Authority (GSA), says in order for shippers in the country to transact business competitively, it is imperative that they engage the services of local insurance companies.
Speaking at a workshop organised in Accra, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GSA, Benonita Bismarck, said her outfit is working in conjunction with the National Insurance Commission to brief its members on the importance of the move.
“We have collaborated with the National Insurance Commission to embark on a sensitization campaign to sensitise shippers on the benefits of insuring their goods with local insurance companies,” she added.
The Authority believes its members stand to benefit immensely from contracting the services of local insurance companies.
The benefits, according to the GSA, include faster and more convenient cargo claims and payment of insurance premiums in the local currency, among others.
Background
The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) has been at the frontline of Ghana’s maritime industry since its establishment in 1974 by NRCD 254.
It has over the years collaborated with private and public organisations in the maritime industry to pursue its primary objective of protecting and promoting the interests of shippers in Ghana, in relation to port, ship and inland transport problems in order to ensure safe, reliable and cost-effective cargo handling.
The GSA operates under the ministerial responsibility of the Ministry of Transport and has a three-tier organizational structure, namely the Governing Board, the Import/Export Shipper Committees and the Secretariat.
