Re-introduce 100 persons limit on social gatherings – Event vendors to government

The Event Vendors Association of Ghana is calling on the government to reconsider the recent ban on events and social gatherings.

According to the Association, the outright and indefinite ban has brought the ailing businesses of its members to a standstill.

Speaking to Citi Business News, Public Relations Officer of the Event Vendors Association of Ghana, Richard Abbey Junior, stated that considering the COVID-19 situation in the country, limiting the numbers at social gatherings to 100 people will be a fair deal for event organisers.

“It is better than none. Not being able to do business at all will not help. If you have about 100 people, at least you can have a sound guy playing, a florist doing some floral and all that. And when it was 100 we were working with the numbers. It was controlled, we had face shields for ushers, we gave free face masks, we had sanitisers, and we ensured all the protocols were fully observed. So having the 100 limit will be better than not having anything at all to do”.

President Akufo-Addo as part of his 23rd Covid-19 update to the nation announced that until further notice, funerals, weddings, concerts, theatrical performances, and parties are banned.

The restriction was reinstated after Ghana’s case count recorded another surge with active cases currently at over 6000 and the death toll at 449.

The President first banned all public gatherings on March 15, 2020, in his eighth televised broadcast to curb the spread of Covid-19 in the country.

At the time, Ghana had recorded only six cases of the disease.

In his ninth address, President Akufo-Addo extended the ban on public gatherings until the end of May 2020.

EVAG had earlier bemoaned the massive effect of the ban on their business.

The group was particularly concerned about its members and clients who have already invested heavily in events scheduled for the next couple of days.
