Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has indicated that the launch of the comprehensive digital service and revenue collection platform, created to provide a single point of access to Government of Ghana services for the public, will increase government revenue by an estimated GHS3 billion.
The Ghana.gov platform is in line with the government’s vision of digitizing the economy and modernizing the way Government pays its bills and collects fees and charges.
The system is also intended to cut out unnecessary bureaucracies and corruption in the provision of public sector services to the public.
According to the Vice President, the Ghana.gov platform during its pilot phase at the Tourism Ministry saw a four-fold increase in revenue at some major tourist centres in the country.
“It is estimated that 10 to 15% of the government revenue is lost through inefficiencies, theft or other accounting schemes. It is expected that Ghana’s revenue will grow by GHS3 billion through the introduction of the Ghana.gov platform,” the vice president said.
Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta noted that the platform has already processed over GHS20 billion during its pilot phase.
“The Ghana.gov platform was piloted from June to December 2020 and a total of 624,000 persons have registered and over 5.8 million transactions have taken place with a total value of GHS20.2 billion,” Mr Ofori-Atta indicated.
Minister for Communication and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said plans are underway to secure the data to be generated through the use of the Ghana.gov platform.
“The Ministry is also assiduously working through the Data Protection Commission and National Cyber Security Centre to safeguard and secure every personal detail. User feedback is important and an integral part of the growth and efficiency of this platform, so we encourage everybody to take advantage of this intervention and make good use of it. It will in the short, medium and long term benefit all Ghanaians directly and indirectly,” Madam Owusu-Ekuful noted.
