In its quest to promote sustainable development, the Ghana Stock Exchange has partnered the UN Sustainable Stock Exchange, SSE, initiative as a new member.
Through this move, the Ghana Stock Exchange has solidified its commitment to transparency and sustainability by becoming a partner exchange of the UN SSE initiative.
This makes the Ghana Stock Exchange the newest member to join a network of 116 stock exchanges and 13 derivatives exchanges around the world that are committed to promoting sustainable development and work towards a common objective of fostering financial markets that support the growth of sustainable and responsible business practices.
The UN Sustainable Stock Exchange, SSE works with exchanges through technical assistance, consensus building, and research to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to stimulate investment for a sustainable future.
According to SSE, GSE becoming a partner exchange of the initiative solidifies its commitment to transparency and sustainability.
Commenting on the move, Managing Director of Ghana Stock Exchange, Ekow Afedzie, said being part of this initiative further reinforces the GSE’s commitment to ESG following the recent approval of Green Bond and Sustainability-themed product rules in the Ghanaian capital market.
“Joining the UN Sustainable Social Exchange initiative could not have come at a better time when there is a global trend towards sustainability-themed products by most Exchanges across the world to support Environmental, Social, and Governance Initiatives (ESG).”
The SSE initiative is a UN Partnership Programme organised by UNCTAD, the UN Global Compact, UNEP FI and the PRI.
The SSE’s mission is to provide a global platform for exploring how exchanges, in collaboration with investors, companies (issuers), regulators, policymakers and relevant international organizations, can enhance performance on ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) issues and encourage sustainable investment, including the financing of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The SSE seeks to achieve this mission through an integrated programme of conducting evidence-based policy analysis, facilitating a network and forum for multi-stakeholder consensus-building, and providing technical assistance and advisory services.
