The Ghana Apparel Manufacturers Association is asking government to prioritize investment in the industry to make the country the preferred apparel manufacturing hub.
The group which is largest apparel-based business advocacy organization in Ghana says given the right support, it will be able to produce t-shirts on large scale to support other sectors including players in the printing industry.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, on the back of its struggles which intertwine with the printing industry, consultant at the Ghana Apparel Manufacturers Association, Nurudeen Mohammed insisted that, it has the capacity to promote growth and profitability of the industry.
“Our shirts are products that are exported to the US market on a regular basis. Our quality is top-notch. The cost here was way cheaper than that of China’s. The manufacturing of the fabric will constitute almost about 50 percent of the t-shirt. The cost of labor in Ghana is also way cheaper than that of China so with the right investment and equipment, you can get Ghanaians produce and even cheaper when they want to sell it locally”, he said.
The apparel manufactures make the point that if their operational challenges that confront the industry are eliminated, it will go a long way to boost the apparel manufacturing value chain.
