National security and the lands commission are currently investigating the growing number of encroachers on lands belonging to the Ghana Airport Company Limited .
Several high rise buildings are developing around the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), posing a security threat to operations of the facility.
There are also concerns about the growing residential areas developing around the airport area.
The Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company Limited Charles Asare speaking to Citi Business News said ,” to the extent that the development is uncontrolled and not consistent with the airport use, it is of concern…with human encroachment comes domesticated animals and also our refuse and our refuse attract birds . Modern airplanes use jet engines , one bird can bring down a jet engine” .
There are reports that unsettled post-decoupling issues relating to assets sharing and title transfers between the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) is the major cause of the encroachment.
Meanwhile the Minister of Transport Dzifa Attivor has been touring the Kotoka International Airport to inspect ongoing work to renovate the facility.
Expansion work on the arrival hall of the airport to ease congestion at the facility is expected to end by close of year.
