The Alliance for Integrity has charged government to put in place strict measures that will reduce corruption between private business owners and public institutions mandated to give approval and licenses.
According to group, government can make corruption unattractive by punishing people who fall foul of the laws of the country.
Speaking to Citi Business News at the sidelines of a workshop organized in collaboration with GIZ on “Making Compliance Attractive for Businesses”, the Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative Mrs. Linda Ofori-Kwafo maintained that the private sector can only thrive when corruption is made expensive.
“I think the challenges that we have discussed touches on the fact that , it is sometimes expensive to be compliance and also because there is lack of enforcement of the rules and policies and there is lack sanctions,” she said.
“That is a general problem in Ghana. It is not only with private businesses in Ghana but then , generally in Ghana . We all know there is no enforcement when it comes to rules and regulation, and even anti-corruption laws have not been well implemented,” she added.
Mrs. Ofori-Kwafo observed that the Nana Addo government has a fine opportunity to reduce corruption due to the acceptance by Ghanaians.
With the government, we are hoping to see some change. Ghanaians have high expectations of the government that campaigned at the back of anti-corruption and promises to set up a number of policies and review legislations. The setting up of a Special Prosecutor is very important as said by this government,” she stressed.
