As Ghana works to bridge the housing deficit, architects are being encouraged to offer affordable housing units for the majority of home seekers.
While it is estimated that Ghana needs about two million housing units to be able to meet the needs of the citizenry, the issue has persisted because most prospective homeowners are unable to secure one due to the high cost of the property.
The Minister of Works and Housing, Samuel Atta Akyea believes the objective behind the creation of land banks could largely materialize when architects begin to provide affordable housing units for construction.
Mr. Atta Akyea who was speaking at an event held by the Ghana Institute of Architects (GIA) to celebrate the World Architecture Day in Accra said:
We have all the things that you will want to import by way of deployment for affordable housing; having tax waivers. And the government has also gotten a lot of land banks. That is to say that, the government has used good money to secure land for affordable house roll out.
For the real task, that I am saying now is that it is imperative that the architects should come out with what they consider as the best house style for the ordinary Ghanaian and it is environment-friendly and it also has gotten the beauty that we need”.
