Woven canes in the form of tables, baskets, and wardrobes are some of the coveted forms of arts and crafts that can be found in various parts of the country.
While there is hardly any data to estimate the value of the woven products on Ghana’s economy, the industry employs quite a number of people – most of whom pitch makeshift camps along some streets in Accra and elsewhere to exhibit their weaving talents.
Located in Cantonments is a workspace for carpenters, weavers, seamstresses and craftsmen producing various forms of furniture and artworks using locally-grown materials like cane, rattan, bamboo and seagrass.
The space has been there for over twenty years and the workers have formed an association called the Switchback Road Cantonments Association.
Citi Business News has been speaking to some of the cane weavers at the very popular cane weaving centre.
In this report, they spoke about their challenges, opportunities and what can be done to support the industry to rake in more revenue and contribute immensely to the Ghanaian economy.
