Sanction culprits in our reports – Auditor General urges Finance ministry

The Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu is urging the Ministry of Finance to strictly sanction individuals or institutions found culpable of misapplying or misusing public funds per its reports.

Mr Asiedu stressed that accountability was key to ensuring the protection of the country’s resources and value for money.

“We also want to urge the minister of finance. You are the one who gives the public institutions money for their various activities.”

“If our reports indicate that a person or a group of persons has not managed our resources properly, we urge you to apply very strict sanctions against those people who have been named in our reports.”

He also raised concerns about some institutions that failed to respond to audit observations raised on the latter.

“We also want to humbly urge the Public Accounts Committee, in your settings do not accept responses to audit observations at your sittings. When our management letters are given to our client, they are given 30 days in which to respond.”

“But over the years we have seen that certain institutions prefer to wait for over a year before they bring their responses to PAC. If you help us in this, I think we will be on a good course.”

He was speaking at the launch of the 2021 financial year audit.

The event was under the theme “Ensuring fiscal sustainability through revenue collection and accounting: The role of the state auditor.”
